The Best of South African Architecture: The Best Architctural Builds

Best of South African Architecture

A quick Google search is sure to reveal who the most popular and awarded architectural firms and individual architects are within South Africa. but this isn’t necessarily a reliable source, as bigger companies tend to have larger marketing budgets and have better SEO. At Inso Aluminium, we’ve worked alongside our fair share of local architects. And thus, we’re able to give you the inside scoop as to who truly is the best (in our experienced opinion, of course. In this article, you will get to know more about the Best of South African architecture as it exists today. We’ll also be sharing our favourite local firms, our favourite house designs and so much more.

What is the Architectural Style of South Africa?

Steeped in culture, the South African Architectural scene is one of the most diverse in the developing world. From the traditional Cape Dutch style of the early settlers to the Ndebele Tribe’s decorative and patterned homes, there are several iconic traditional and historic architectural niches within South Africa. But that’s not quite what we’re talking about here.

In short, the architectural style of South Africa is pretty much what we’re seeing all around the globe at the moment: Contemporary Architecture.

What makes “contemporary architecture” different in South Africa is two-fold – firstly, the climate has a major role to play in the design of buildings, both residential and otherwise. And second, the combination of culture, ethnicity and socio-economic factors have contributed to the very specific form of contemporary architecture you’re likely to encounter in South Africa.

Which Architectural Companies are the Best in South Africa?

Which Architectural Companies are the Best in South Africa

There are many architectural firms in South Africa, and the majority of them are good enough to get the job done. But some projects do require the skills of an experienced team with expert status. With this in mind, these three represent our top three of the best of south african architecture companies (in no particular order)

1. SAOTA Architects

Famous within our borders and beyond, SAOTA Architects are the firm behind many noteworthy contemporary buildings including Eventide Cape Town, WARF in Congo, Kingsway Tower in Nigeria, Villa Courbe in Switzerland, and our personal favourite the Clifton Terraces in Cape Town. SAOTA Architects are innovative and work with the latest technologies to provide their clients with the very best in contemporary design and execution.

2. Boogertman & Partners Architects

Established in the early 80s, Boogertman & Partners grew from a handful of architects to be the largest architectural firm in South Africa. Today, they have offices across South Africa and Kenya, and they work on projects throughout Africa and the Middle East. They work closely with urban architects, landscape architects, technicians and interior designers.

3. Hofman Architects

Based in Pretoria, Hofman Architects has been around since 1994. In its tenure, Hofman has helped bring its clients’ visions to life and worked on a diverse portfolio of buildings, within both the commercial and residential spaces.

Who is the Best Architect In South Africa?

Deciding who’s the “best” at anything, especially an art form, is quite subjective. So instead, we’ll tell you which architect inspires us the most:

Stefan Antoni of SAOTA Architects

He may not have been born in South Africa, but Stefan has been a South African resident for long enough to be considered a local architect. And besides, his business, SAOTA Architects, is based here. Stefan completed his Bachelor of Architecture in 1985 at UCT and went on to set up his firm a mere two years later. His influence on the industry throughout his career has been massive, and he is said to be one of a few architects whose work set a new standard of design.

Famous South African Architecture

Apart from the traditional, iconic and historic, the list of world-renowned South African buildings is rather extensive. Our local architects are known for their ability to create both corporate spaces where practicality is the focus, and buildings that are works of art first and foremost. Here are two examples of our favourites:

Alice Lane Towers, Johannesburg

Designed by Paragon Architects, the Alice Lane Towers in Johannesburg are a testament to corporate contemporary architecture within Africa. Form and space have been prioritised in the design of these twin towers, and getting the internal structure right was just as important to these architects as the design of the facade.

Bosjes Chapel, Wellington

Completed in 2016, the Bosjes Chapel was designed by Steyn Studio and is fully operational. It’s a sculpture that mimics the surrounding landscape whilst paying tribute to the gables found in Cape Dutch architecture. This building is an exquisite example of how architecture can work with nature to complement rather than detract.

Best House Designs in South Africa

Designing and building a green home comes with many different considerations relating to design, style, material choice, and more. Each of these impact the budget for building a house and the house building costsWhile there are countless design directions you could take when designing a house, there is a handful that seems to be more popular than the rest. These include Victorian-influenced cottages that feature decorative terraces, Cape Dutch-inspired structures, and of course homes built on the principles of modern architecture.
